Top 10 Tuesday: 10 Books on My Spring TBR List

It’s difficult for me to think about Spring when I just had to sit through yet another snow storm on the weekend (thanks, Canadian weather). But the topic for this week’s Top 10 Tuesday with Broke & the Bookish is our Spring TBR list, so I’m going to close the curtains in my home office and try really hard to think about warmer weather and the perfect books to welcome in the new season.

This is one of those books that I’ve been meaning to read since the day I was born (not literally), but I still haven’t gotten around to it: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. It’s tiny and will probably not even take an entire afternoon to read, so I’m putting this on my Spring TBR list once and for all.

The comics industry dislikes me because I’m one of those people who prefer comics in trade paperback format. I’ve been reading/collecting the Fables series by Bill Willingham for forever now, and the final two volumes are set to come out this Spring (the last one scarily close to the first day of summer, but it just meets the Spring cut off for this list). I’m not happy about having to say goodbye. Here’s hoping I continue to avoid spoilers.

I desperately need to catch up on two middle grade book series. I love the first book from both of these series, but I continue putting off reading the subsequent books even though they’re sitting on my TBR shelf. So, I will be finally getting around to continuing The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer and The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani.

I’ve been meaning to read more poetry and Spring feels like the right time to finally do that. I’m going to start with Sylvia Plath’s Ariel because I know I’ll like it, and then eventually (hopefully) branch out from there to more contemporary things that aren’t necessarily in classic literary anthologies.

I usually re-read Wicked by Gregory Maguire at the beginning of every year, but I didn’t do that this January. I have probably cursed myself for the foreseeable future. I am going to re-read it this year, I’ve just decided to try it out in a different season. Maybe it will change my perspective? I’m not sure, but I do know that I’m excited to visit my BFF Elphaba again.

The buzz around this book has me super excited. Made You Up by Francesca Zappia is supposed to be great for Wes Anderson fans (which I am—see my Top 10 Tuesday post from last week if you don’t believe me), so I know I’ll be picking this book up.

I’m one of those weirdos who colors in coloring books to de-stress. This also helps me focus while watching movies because I have the worst wandering mind. I started doing this when I started University and had a weird stack of kids’ colouring books in my dorm room. But now there are colouring books for actual adults. I’m serious. Book like Enchanted Forest: An Inky Quest & Coloring Book illustrated by Johanna Basford. I’m getting me one of these for Springtime balcony color sessions.

This book is a horrible plug because, well, it’s a Quirk book and it’s written by one of my clients, but there’s no denying that we (this includes me, and most likely a few people who work at Quirk) are excited for this book. The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy by Sam Maggs is the cutest, smartest, prettiest book (that last point thanks to the awesome illustrations by Kelly Bastow) for geeks.

And lastly, Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination by J.K. Rowling—because I will read everything she writes as a thank you for writing the Harry Potter series.
