“April showers bring May flowers,” as the adage goes. While there are a variety of naming schemes for people in the world, like religious names, familial names and virtue naming, one of the most popular has for a long time been floral names. Since it is now the month of May, we wanted to look at some of our favorite floral characters and provide you with links to the flowers they are named after to build your ultimate floral garden.

May 10th is National Shrimp Day, and for those wondering why the humble prawn gets its own national day, it’s simply because shrimp is America’s most popular seafood! (Although, for those looking for any excuse to chow down on a crustacean, there is also National Lobster Day in June, and National Crabmeat day in March.) Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood—but we don’t just love our shrimp on a plate.

Shrimp also appear across pop-culture as characters in animated family movies, in webcomics, stand-up comedy, and even sitcoms and film. These are the shrimpy moments that stuck with us.

Grishaverse fans rejoice! Tomorrow is the long-awaited release of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone adaptation, and we’re living for it. Whether you’re an OG Shadow and Bone trilogy fan, an adjacent Six of Crows duology fanatic, or a recent inductee after watching the cinematic trailers, noticing the great cast chemistry, or diving unawares into the more recent King of Scars duology, this weekend is going to be a blast of action-packed, heart-pounding, and potentially tear-jerking content.

But we all know lows can come after the highs, especially after binging all 8 episodes of what is predicted to be a rather addictive series, and you’re going to need something to fill that Shadow and Bone hole in your heart. You can re-read or catch up on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, or you can think of your favorite Grishaverse character and give one of these book recommendations a try.

(Apologies Baghra, Genya, Nikolai, Tamar, Tolya, etc. fans, but there are just too many great characters in this universe. We can get them next time with the release of a hopeful season 2!)

There are a ton of great characters out there in the literary and popular culture world. Some of them have become so iconic that they are almost a part of the social zeitgeist. There are so few people who don’t know Holden Caulfield or Victor Frankenstein, those characters who just steal the show, but what about the side characters? The ones who hold up a story like scaffolding but are often overlooked? Well, Disney and Marvel have seen fit to give a pair of those characters, Sam Wilson a.k.a. Netflix is really hitting it out of the park with adaptations of young adult novels these days, and it looks like Moxie is no exception. We’re thrilled that Jennifer Mathieu’s incredible book is getting so much attention, and we’re so excited that Amy Poehler is involved!
