May 10th is National Shrimp Day, and for those wondering why the humble prawn gets its own national day, it’s simply because shrimp is America’s most popular seafood! (Although, for those looking for any excuse to chow down on a crustacean, there is also National Lobster Day in June, and National Crabmeat day in March.) Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood—but we don’t just love our shrimp on a plate.

Shrimp also appear across pop-culture as characters in animated family movies, in webcomics, stand-up comedy, and even sitcoms and film. These are the shrimpy moments that stuck with us.

It’s Star Wars Day and we have so much to look forward to. First of all, we’re definitely signing off every Zoom call with “May the force be with you.” (It’s pretty much the law, right?) And once the work day ends, there’s a one hundred percent chance that we’re going to watch Bad Batch on Disney+. But with a week between episodes, it’s guaranteed that we’re going to need more Star Wars content than that. It’s hard to make rocks and minerals seem cool—despite the name, they just aren’t the "rock" stars of pop culture. In fact, they are often the province of geeks, like when Phoebe reveals to Ross in Friends that she mugged him, when he was a nerdy kid with a backpack sticker that read "Geology Rocks." Or when, even in the nerdy world of The Big Bang Theory, the least cool character is Bert, the socially awkward geologist that the other scientists make fun of.
 

However, there’s at least one rock’that is the epitome of cool—Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson! The ex-wrestler is the biggest, most popular (and least problematic) of them all. Famous as a WWE wrestler who made it to Hollywood super-stardom, the Rock may be famous for his massive stature and his action movies, but he’s increasingly popular for his wholesome social media posts, too. A total inspiration with a love of cute dogs and jaw-dropping ‘cheat’ meals, the Rock remains our favorite rock of all—we published a book about him, after all—but these others come close!

With National Film Score Day back this April 3rd, film scores are on the mind. Last year we matched movie scores with book recommendations so readers could not only transport themselves via words but via music as well. This year we’re trying something different and imagining which film composers would create fitting OSTs (original soundtracks) for Quirk book adaptations.

Quirk has had a handful of books adapted for the big screen, most notably Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and 2016’s Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and there’s even an Amazon TV series in the works for The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. But what about those that haven't made it to the screen yet?

Not too long ago it was pretty easy for indie, foreign, or streamed films to fly under the Oscar radar, but this past year has been, simply put, a weird one, causing major shifts in movie theater releases and a heavy focus on accessible movie streaming. And although this year hasn’t been the kindest, it’s nice to know that movies that historically could have been ignored by the Academy have rightfully earned their place as nominees for the 2021 Oscars.
