Here at Quirk, we love science fiction. There is nothing as entertaining as a good piece of speculative fiction with great story lines and characters. While there are some writers who are well established science fiction masters like Harlan Ellison, Philip K. Dick and Octavia Butler, there are also some creators who have the skills to make some of the best science fiction to ever hit the shelves but simply haven’t gone down that path yet. With that in mind, it seemed appropriate to speculate on what the future of science fiction writing may look like.

There are a few things to consider when bringing people together in any kind of group. First and foremost, there’s the question of whether they’ll get along — whether their personalities will complement each other. When it comes to book clubs, it’s also important that members are reliable: they’ll read their books, follow the rules, and contribute meaningfully. What would our literary dream team look like, then? This ultimate book club must comprise people who will keep things fun and fresh, who will always be on time, contribute food and wine, and most importantly: actually read the book.

Here are five people who would make a boss book club, and (probably) not harm or hex each other.

Unless you’ve been living under a super powered rock for the past ten years (yes, the first Iron Man premiered back in 2008), then you know cinematic universes are all the rage right now. Marvel’s short after-credits scene at the end of Iron Man changed the dynamics of the entire movie business. Now, with Stephen King kicking off his own mythology mash-up with Castle Rock, we started thinking about what cinematic universes we want to see next.

The 70th annual Emmy Awards are on Monday and while we’ve been re-watching our favorite shows in anticipation, nothing beats the love we have for our favorite novelists. And while the Emmy’s haven’t created an award for Best Original Source Material – and come on, why not? – that hasn’t stopped us from imagining what that nomination pool would look like. And because we can’t bear to imagine any of our favorites losing, we’re dreaming up acceptance speeches for each of them.

The Jurassic Park franchise has created entire generations obsessed with dinosaurs. And what’s not to like? They were giant, scaly (OK, probably feathery) monsters ripped straight from the pages of a fantasy novel. As Jurassic Park has proved over and over again, dinosaurs can make anything better. With that being said, we injected the terrible lizards into some of our favorite books. Welcome to…Jurassic Word!

September 15 is Batman Day

There will not be a parade. Mayor Hill made that abundantly clear. There would be no parade celebrating the career of a vigilante, especially one wanted by the police. Once you laud these men and women who take crime into their own hands, the mayor said, the rule of law goes out the window.
