We don’t know about you, but we’ve gotten really into board games during this extended time indoors. We’ve also gotten really into reading – but that won’t come as a surprise at all. We decided to celebrate two of our current obsessions by pairing some of our favorite Quirk Books titles with their incredibly delightful board game doppelgängers. Let’s play!

Bookish and the Beast and Bring Your Own Book

If you’re a voracious reader like Rosie in Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston, you’ll want to pick up the card-based tabletop game Bring Your Own Book. It’s a bookish twist on Apples to Apples – only the second deck is a book from your very own library. Players compete to find the line to match “Lyrics from a soft power ballad” or “The last thing you want to hear on a first date.” Keep things interesting by swapping books with your fellow players every round or so. And be sure to have a book from Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series in the mix to keep things interesting!

Stuff Every Sushi Lover Should Know and Sushi Go

If you’ve been working your way through Stuff Every Sushi Lover Should Know by Marc Luber and Brett Cohen, order from your favorite sushi restaurant and play a few rounds of Sushi Go. Come for the cute illustrations of tempura and sashimi, stay for the delightfully fun time you’ll have playing this pick and pass card game.

Kid Innovators and Ticket to Ride

If you see yourself in the inventors and trailblazers in Kid Innovators by Robin Stevenson and Allison Steinfeld, then grab some road maps and a wide-eyed optimism for a national railway system for Ticket to Ride. Build railways and chart out new courses across the United States. And who knows, you might come up with an incredible invention as you lay track from Portland to Las Vegas.

The GayBCs and Bananagrams

If your ABCs include the letters LGBTQIA and more, you’ll want to check out The GayBCs by M. L. Webb. And while you’re at it, why not put a twist on National Scrabble Day with a twist on Scrabble itself: Bananagrams! While we love the original tile game, there’s something wonderfully portable about this banana stuffed with letters. It’s more casual, more joyful. And that’s exactly the vibe we’re going for.

William Shakespeare’s Star Wars and Star Wars Battleship

If you’re a fan of the William Shakespeare’s Star Wars series from Ian Doescher, you’re sure to love Star Wars Battleship – a Galactic Empire versus Rebel Alliance twist on the classic “you sunk my Battleship” game. We learned long ago that Star Wars is even better with a Shakespearian twist, so you can trust us when we say that Battleship is exponentially better in a Star Wars setting. May the force be with you, my friends.
