Nine Adventurous Cross-Stitch Projects for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Whether you are killing time, waiting for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug or needing to fill those moments between second breakfast and elevenses, I’ve gathered together nine incredible Tolkien-inspired cross-stitch patterns. Grab your supplies for these wonderful journeys in cross-stitch, and maybe some lembas to help keep you sated during your adventures.
The Hobbit Cross-Stitch Pattern
Designed by XStitchMyHeart, this adorable pattern features the 15 main characters from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: Gloin, Oin, Balin, Dwalin, Bofur, Bifur, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, and Bombur. If fifteen is too many, you can isolate the smaller characters and stitch them individually on other stitchable items. When stitching the pattern as a whole, the finished design will measure 21.36 inches wide by 8.21 inches high, when stitched on 14-count Aida fabric. The Hobbit Silhouette
Set off with this The Hobbit silhouette of Gandalf leading a ragtag crew on their way to an incredible adventure. When using 14-count Aida fabric, the finished size is 17.86 inches wide by 9.14 inches high, and used 28 different DMC colors. One of the great things about pattern, designed by KnittenKitten, is its versatility. If you are feeling really ambitious, you could stitch only the lettering and the silhouettes of the characters, using DMC 310, on white fabric, or using DMC B5200 on black fabric.
A Halfling Named Baggins Cross-Stitch Pattern
The Hobbit wouldn’t be what it is without the unlikely hero: Bilbo Baggins. This pattern may be a little daunting, what with its use of 60 different DMC colors, but if Bilbo is willing to take a journey into the Wild, then there is no reason you cannot slay this pattern by UntoldStitches, inspired by one of the movie posters for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. When stitched on 14-count Aida fabric, the finished design will measure 17.75 inches wide by 11.75 inches high.
Tolkien Alphabet Cross-Stitch Pattern
What better way to teach your kiddo Tolkien's characters than throwing in a little ABC practice at the same time? Not only is this Tolkien alphabet cross-stitch pattern designed by XStitchMyHeart a wonderful way to educate your little one on things Tolkien, but it also makes some creative gift ideas. Hobbit House Cross-Stitch Chart
Feeling brave? Then why not tackle this Hobbit house cross-stich pattern…without a color legend! That’s right, you choose the colors while using the chart as a general guide. It might seem like a scary challenge indeed, but once you've picked the appropriate shades of green, brown, blue, and yellow, plus the colors of the flowers and doorknob, it's just a matter of there and back again (and the pattern’s description does say how many shades of each you need, so you’re not left completely on your own as you risk creative doom!) Stitched on 14-count Aida fabric, the finished pattern will measure 13.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches high.
Middle Earth Map
Bilbo’s journey may have been unexpected (and long!) but as you follow one of our favorite Hobbit’s adventures, you can have an advantage that he didn't: a map! Looking at the Middle Earth map designed by Servotron may make your hairy feet to shake in their…well, just shake, but it's not as daunting as all that. First, make sure you have good lighting if you are going to stitch this pattern on the recommended 22-count Aida fabric. When finished, it will measure approximately 14.5 inches square. If you want to stitch it on something easier on the eyes, like 14-count Aida fabric, it will measure close to 23 inches square, making for an excellent square pillow cover. The pattern uses 39 different DMC colors, which really isn’t all that bad when you consider the size of the map. To use this pattern, you will need to download KG-Chart For Cross-Stitch. Lord of the Rings Stained Glass
I’m not sure there are proper English words to describe this Lord of the Rings stained glass pattern, so I’ll use a little Elvish and call it bein. Designed by KnittenKitten, this magnificent creation will measure approximately 18 inches wide by 25 inches high when stitched on 18-count Aida fabric. It uses 53 different DMC colors, none of which are less than 500 stitches. This epic pattern will probably keep you busy for months to come…which may come in handy while you wait for the final installment of Peter Jackson's trilogy.
One Ring
Just when you thought this collection of patterns couldn’t get any more challenging or daunting, let me present to you the most preeeeecious of patterns: The One Ring. Designed by WibblyWobblyStitches, the pattern looks simple enough, but not only is it filled with back-stitches, it makes use of lots of metallic flosses as well (and if you’ve ever worked with metallic floss, you know you may want to brush up on your Halfling swearing before getting started!) Still, it's a beautiful design, and when finished, it will measure 10.07 inches wide by 9.57 inches high, when stitched on 14-count Aida fabric.
Smaug
Of course a list celebrating the upcoming release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug would not be complete without a pattern of Tolkien’s drawing of Smaug. Designed by 8thLesson, this pattern will measure 11.5 inches wide by 5 inches high when stitched on 18-count Aida fabric. But this isn't only just a lovely rendering of Tolkien's own drawing: first, it’s only one color to rule them all, so you can make your dragon any color you choose. Second, this pattern would make for a great addition to a bed runner or along the edge of your pillow cases. All you need is some 18-count waste canvas, one color of floss, and your desired item, and you’re good to go!
