How-To Tuesday: Crafting Your Own Pom-Pom Headband

Posted by Basia Padlo

Happy New Year, crafty readers! How-To Tuesday is back, and this week we're cracking open our Quirk Throws You 5 Awesome Parties eBook and showing you how to make this adorable Pom Poms Headband. This tutorial can also be found in Pom Poms!Crafters can shrink the pom on this showstopper headband to their liking, trimming it smaller for a subtler look. For a seriously glam look, use glittery tulle.

What you'll need:

  1. Tulle
  2. Cardboard
  3. Crochet thread
  4. Scissors
  5. Hot-glue gun
  6. Metal headband
  7. Sequins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make a pom-pom with tulle using the Cardboard-C Wrap method (see below), wrapping at least 8 times. Use crochet thread folded in half for the tying thread.
  2. Tie the threads of the finished pom-pom around the headband in a double knot. Wrap the ends around it twice and trim.
  3. Secure the ends to the headband with a dab of hot glue. Glue on sequins, if using.

Cardboard C Wrap Method

Trace this template to create the pom size you need. Teeny or ginormous poms can be made by enlarging or reducing the template on a photocopier. Just remember that the bigger the C, the more wrapping material you’ll need.

You'll need:

For the template:

  1. Parchment paper
  2. Pencil
  3. Cardboard
  4. Scissors

For the pom:

  1. At least 8 yards of wrappable material, such as yarn, thread, or tulle
  2. One 24-inch piece of tying material—a sturdy thread or wire that will blend into the pom—folded in half

Directions

  1. Trace the C template onto parchment; cut out and trace onto two pieces of cardboard, then cut out two cardboard C’s. Stack one atop the other.
  2. Starting at one end of the C, pinch yarn against cardboard to keep it in place. Then wrap yarn snugly around both templates, continuing until you are ½ inch from the other end. Repeat at least four times to create a full fluffy pom.
  3. Holding the yarn wrapped templates with one hand, insert a scissor blade between the two pieces of cardboard at one end. Slice through the wrapped yarn along the entire outside edge. Pinch together the still-wrapped but uncut section as you snip along the template.
  4. Rest the template on the table. Holding the folded tying thread taut, slide it between the two pieces of cardboard, starting at the middle gap in the C. Pull each end of tying thread around the template until they meet across from the gap. Pull tightly around the center of the pom and tie a knot.
  5. Flip the pom over and tie a double knot, binding the two halves together. Pull off the cardboard templates. Fluff your pom-pom and give it a haircut.
