Favorite Younger Brothers in Pop Culture
Today, we raise a glass to the younger brothers in pop culture. The overlooked second children. The “aren’t you related to _____?” of the world. They’ve been compared to their siblings their entire lives and there’s nothing we can do about that. Except celebrate them.
Liam Hemsworth
We’ll start with the birthday boy – Liam Hemsworth. With two older brothers to overshadow him, we’re happy he didn’t exercise some good old-fashioned sibling rebellion and cast off the idea of acting altogether. (His brothers are a couple of little known actors named Luke and Craig – we mean Chris! You may know them from the indie hits Westworld and Thor. Just kidding, they’re very famous.) Liam is perhaps best known for playing Gale Hawthorne in the Hunger Games series – a star making role for those of us who didn’t have a chance to see him in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. (He was seventeen. It was very cute.) Prior to the fictional world of Panem, Liam starred opposite his fiancée Miley Cyrus in the Nicholas Sparks film The Last Song. This year, we’re looking forward to seeing him play opposite Diane Guerrero in Killerman, where he’ll play a small-time money launderer. With that punim?
Dave Franco
For years, Dave Franco was “that Franco kid from Scrubs.” But today, we’re more excited about him than any of the other Franco brothers. (Sorry, Tom. Sorry, James.) Dave made his professional acting debut in Seventh Heaven (really) and scored small roles in Milk and Superbad before booking a recurring role on ABC Family gem Greek. (Remember Gonzo?) His comedic timing has come a long way since those Cyprus-Rhodes University days. He’s phenomenal in The Little Hours – the most underrated film of last year, if you’re asking us. (If you need us, we’ll be over here watching it a million times in a row.) Next up in our Dave Franco viewing list: The Disaster Artist, which he stars in alongside his brother James and wife Alison Brie.
Andy Favreau
When your older brother is the head of a podcast empire – hello, Crooked Media – standing out as an actor can be a difficult task. But Andy Favreau caught our eye earlier this year when Mindy Kaling announced that he would star in her post-The Mindy Project television project. Andy’s character has been described as a “gorgeous idiot,” but as the younger brother of former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau, we know he’ll be playing against type.
Stephen Glover
“Nobody Beats the Biebs,” an Atlanta episode that imagines Justin Bieber as a Black trash talking hip hop artist, was a stroke of pure genius. Luckily, FX recognized that genius and signed an overall deal with writer Stephen Glover, younger brother of Donald Glover. Later this year, Stephen will serve as showrunner and executive producer on an untitled animated series based on Marvel’s Deadpool comics. These brothers seem joined at the hip and we love it. Donald will be working alongside Stephen on the Deadpool series and the two continue to work together on Atlanta – which will be coming back in February. (Yay!)
