There are a ton of great characters out there in the literary and popular culture world. Some of them have become so iconic that they are almost a part of the social zeitgeist. There are so few people who don’t know Holden Caulfield or Victor Frankenstein, those characters who just steal the show, but what about the side characters? The ones who hold up a story like scaffolding but are often overlooked? Well, Disney and Marvel have seen fit to give a pair of those characters, Sam Wilson a.k.a. The Falcon and James Buchanan “Bucky” Barns a.k.a. The Winter Soldier their own spin-off tv show. To celebrate the release of Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney+, we at Quirk wanted to take a look at some other pairs who could use their own spin-offs.

Jacquel and Ibis from American Gods

While not particularly prominent in Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods, Jacquel and Ibis do play an important role as gatekeepers to the afterlife. Working out of their mortuary, the two help usher dead characters back and forth across the realms. This seems like a mystery/detective duo story just waiting to be told. The two characters would be perfect for hunting down and talking to murderers or helping the dead complete unfinished business.

The Twins from Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

What is known about the twins at Miss Peregrine's? Honestly, not a heck of a lot. The two boys keep their faces covered and only speak to each other. Their presence is fairly mysterious, and a spin-off series would be a perfect opportunity to fill in the gaps. Who are they? Where did they come from? What are they up to? All of this and more could be answered.

Batman (Dick Grayson) and Robin (Damien Wayne) from Batman

For a brief stint while Bruce Wayne was out of commission, his former ward and sidekick, Dick Grayson took over Batman duties with his own Robin, Bruce’s young son, Damien, who’s mother, Talia al Ghul raised him as a member of the League of Assassins. To say that the man Batman raised as a son and Batman’s somewhat estranged genetic son had an interesting and volatile relationship is an understatement. There have been a million adaptations of Bruce’s story, but what happens after Bruce, that is where it get’s interesting.

Reginald Hargreaves and Pogo from The Umbrella Academy

Before he was the father of the seven members of the Umbrella Academy, Reginald Hargreaves was just a hip Alien with all sorts of interesting plans. Along for the ride with Reggie was his companion and friend, the chimp Pogo. There hasn’t been much information yet in either the comics or the Netflix show about Reggie and Pogo’s time together and a spin-off of the two of them on adventures could give a stronger sense of why Hargreaves is the way he is with his adopted children.

Ambrose Spellman and Prudence Night from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The recently finished Netflix adaptation of Sabrina was a strong showing for Archie comics. While the characters were interesting and the plots fast paced, there is one relationship which could have used even more fleshing out, that of Prudence Night and Ambrose Spellman. The two lovers/monster hunters carried multiple episodes of the show and are just begging to have their own spin-off.
