Dating these days can be hard. Sometimes it feels like everything is simpler in books, where finding a partner doesn’t require a witty profile on a smartphone app. How might some of those characters advise us on dating now? Here are some noteworthy romantic characters with love advice to spare:

Ah, toast. A staple of breakfasts, poor students, busy people in need of a bite, and of course, millennials everywhere (but only when topped with avocado). Just a slice of bread, heated by the magic of a toaster until it becomes warm, filling, crunchy, and the perfect way to get all kinds of delicious toppings into your mouth. Simple.

Less simple, of course, is the other kind of toast. The kind where someone has to get up in front of friends and family and say a few words. Ideally, words that are kind, funny, interesting, illuminating…and not too long. So in honor of National Toast Day on February 23, we’ve rounded up some of the most memorable toasts in pop culture, whether they're good, bad, or awful!

There are plenty of pets in pop culture. Movies, TV, books, and comics are filled with furry (and not so furry) friends. The new film The Prodigy explores what happens when your child is too smart for their own good. As in, the kind of smartness that, naturally, leads to murder (what other alternative could there be?) Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and, let’s face it, there’s a lot of pressure to get the perfect gift. You’re already nervous enough that your crush doesn’t like you back — or that your friends won’t be available for a proper Galentine’s Day bash. You don’t need to added pressure of consumerism. Here’s our advice: skip the chocolates and opt instead for a bookish display of your affections. We came up with a few ideas to get those creative juices going.
