Classic and Young Adult Sci-Fi Novels To Check Out on National Science Fiction Day

January 2nd is unofficial National Science Fiction Day. Ever hear of a guy named Isaac Asimov? He was only one of the most famous science fiction writers of his time, which is why Sci-Fi Day is celebrated on his birthday! He also had some pretty impressive sideburns. Now, no one actually seems to be certain of the exact date he was born, including Asimov himself, but he chose to celebrate it on January 2nd and someone down the line decided to celebrate science fiction on the same day.

Questionable origins aside, what is one to do on a National Science Fiction Day? Read, of course! What could be better than dedicating a day to reading all those books you got for Christmas? In honor of Mr. Asimov and sci-fi writers and readers everywhere, here’s a list of my favorite sci-fi novels, as well as some sci-fi classics that I plan to pick up and enjoy on January 2nd.

How to Decorate Your Bookshelves for the Holidays

Let’s just accept it: the bookshelf is the most important part of any room. And sadly, rarely do the shelves get any attention while we spruce up (sometimes literally) for the holidays. But not this year! Use these ideas to get started.

Christmas Lists from Our Favorite Fictional Characters

It's almost Christmas! That means it's time to start scrambling to try and figure out what each friend and family member wants to see wrapped under the tree on Christmas morning. With all the craziness of the holidays, though, sometimes it's easy for some of the most important people to fall through the gift-giving cracks—namely, your favorite fictional book characters. To make things easier, they've written their own letters to Santa mapping out what they would like for Christmas. See if you can make some wishes come true this holiday season!

Sneak Peek: The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook

It's always an exciting moment when advances of a new book arrive at the ol' Quirk Books HQ. Yesterday several boxes of The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook arrived, and they looked so lovely that I just had to take a couple of pictures to show them off. I'm really psyched to be working with an author as awesome as Kate White (@katemwhite), and this book is just a great, great addition to the Quirk library.

When the book's editor, the fabulous Tiffany Hill (@TiffanyLHill), came down to check out the advances, I asked her what she loved about working on the book:

"This book was so much fun to work on. Over one hundred of the best crime writers out there, all Mystery Writers of America members, submitted their recipes for it. Some are things their characters eat, some are things they make when they turn in a manuscript or when they're focused on a deadline, and some are simply their favorites.

The best part is, all of the contributors are storytellers, and even though a recipe is a totally different medium from a full-length novel, they're still telling stories. You really get a taste of the worlds they create, whether it's a murderer or a dinner party around the corner. I literally laughed and cried the first time I read the manuscript and different recipes. And afterwards, I added a lot of books to my to-read list!"

Enjoy the sneak peek! The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook will be available March 24th. Bloggers! Media! Want to request a review copy? Email me ([email protected]), and I'll hook you up in 2015!
