Books to Read While Your TV Show’s on Hiatus
Have you been finding yourself talking about your favorite TV characters like they’re your long distance friends? Obsessively checking to see when your favorite show comes back hoping time might have sped up? Yeah, us too. It’s that time of year when premieres are close enough for gossip and set photos to be leaked, BUT they’re still months from airing. Since we don’t want to lose our marbles anymore than you do, we’ve created a list of books to read while you wait.
Orphan Black
Orpah Black is a master at the slow Sci-Fi mystery reveal and so is the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. When you’re finished you have the option to watch the film adaptation. But perhaps you just want another amazing Sci-Fi story? Well, Deadly Design by Debra Dockter is perfect, as the plot revolves around genetically modified kids suddenly dying before their 18th birthday. If your favorite is Sara, or you laugh and cheer when Helena goes violent, The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins is calling your name. Don’t even read the summary or blurbs just dive in and enjoy the weird, crazy, dark humored ride. But what if what you miss are the strong female friendships? Then read The Awesome Girl’s Guide to Dating Extraordinary Men. Don’t let the title fool you, it’s fiction and not a dating manual.
Chelsea Lately
While you wait for her Netflix show debut, Sarah Colonna’s Has Anyone Seen My Pants? is a perfect read in the meantime. Colonna manages to bring the humor she was known for while also infusing heart and some awesome friendships.
Castle
We can see Castle reading The Tokyo Zodiac Murders by Soji Shimada and driving Beckett crazy with all his wild guessing as to who the murder(s) was(were) and more importantly HOW they committed the murder(s)— See what we did there? We don’t give nothing away when discussing mysteries! If you want a mystery a little less horrific and impossible to figure out, Beckett, Castle, Esposito, and Ryan would do a great job with The Truth and Other Lies by Sascha Arango. And there’s always Manhattan Mayhem, a collection of mystery stories set in various Manhatten neighborhoods. Just don’t get Castle started on why he wasn’t asked to participate.
Jane The Virgin
This show is not just about being unique and quirky, but so many things all at once, which means waiting is extra hard! If you love Jane, and watching her navigate through life while trying to find herself amongst the noise of her family and society, Gabi, A Girl in Pieces will certainly satisfy. And something about the blend of drama and love in The Wrath & The Dawn by Renée Ahdieh, fulfilled us temporarily. We can totally see Jane and Shazi as friends, giving each other much needed life advice.
iZombie
If you're missing the show, why not try iZombie the comic! But seriously, it’s different characters and stories than the show, which means you get what you love (minus Major’s abs/and all of Ravi) without knowing what is going to happen next. It’s perfect.
Hindsight
If you love the idea of some “time traveling” to get you to a place where you might have a chance at fixing your life and you haven’t already read Rainbow Rowell’s Landline you’re going to want to. Sorry, no Lolly.
Black-ish
A 1950’s “re-imagining” of Snow White and the obsession of beauty mixed with ancestry and race certainly seems a book that would be read and discussed in the Johnson home and has us looking at Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi to hold us over.
The Big Bang Theory
If you love their “useless facts” knowledge and all their video game playing you’re going to want to read Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation by Blake J. Harris. Just get ready to start harassing everyone you know with a bunch of TIL and OMG DID YOU KNOW!? Like, did you know He-Man the doll came before the comic/cartoon? And do you know how Donkey Kong was created? And…
