Hello, lovers of literature! November is here, and it's brought lots of events for you to go out and enjoy. Colder temperatures and damp streets may have you thinking bleak thoughts, but there's plenty of light and energy in Philadelphia this week.
Some poets love comic books. Some artists love poetry. Check out the colorful mashup of Full Bleed: A Poetry Comics show on Friday, November 7 from 5pm to 9pm at Indy Hall, 22 N.3rd Street in Philly. Word Nerds, Comic Nerds, and everyone in between will also enjoy music from DJ Easyreader and free cupcakes!
Also on Friday, The Philly Pigeon poetry slam is back with featured poet Jamaal St. John! If you've ever wanted to judge a poet's stage performace Olympic-style, this event is definitely for you. Yes, even you, East German Judge. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th Street. Workshop at 7pm, slam at 8:30pm, $10 general admission, $5 slam participants, students two for $10 with student ID.
On Saturday November 8th from 2pm til 5pm, join Philadelphia Urban Creators at 2315 N 11th Street for a North Philly Storytelling Block Party. The Philadelphia History Truck will be on hand to collect stories and map memories with participants. There's a shared meal, a DJ, and spoken word performances on tap.
Sunday, November 9th marks the return of the Jubilant Thicket reading series to Headhouse Books, 619 S 2nd Street at 5pm. Featured writers this month are Travis Cebula, Sarah Suzor and Kelly McQuain. This trio of powerhouse poets is sure to make something special out of your autumn afternoon.
The First Person Arts Festival is in town through November 15th, and includes plenty of great events in memoir and storytelling. We're excited for the First Person Arts Podcast LIVE! event on Wednesday, November 12th at Christ Church Neighborhood House, 9pm-11pm. Tickets are $22. We at APIARY are excited because Marissa Johnson-Valenzuela, one of our authors, is one of the evenings storytellers alongside WHYY's Dave Davies and the awesome Yowei Shaw.
TireFire Readings returns to Tattooed Mom's on Thursday, November 13th at 7pm, featuring the work of Diane Cook, Carmen Maria Machado, Ryan MacDonald and Juliet Escoria.
All that running between literary events should keep you warm and toasty! We'll see you again next week for all the bookish events you should know about in Philadelphia.
