Book Recs for the Characters in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Brooklyn Nine Nine has just launched its seventh season, with an eighth already confirmed, and fans are thrilled that this epic cop comedy has found a new home on NBC and can keep making us laugh. Police work may be serious business in the real world, but in this fictionalized slice of Brooklyn, it is anything but, with the detectives of the Nine-Nine constantly getting up to all kinds of ridiculous hijinks…and with all that going on, it’s unlikely that most of them have any time to read (except Amy, of course, who will always find time to read), but in case they do, we’ve got the perfect picks for each of them!
Captain Holt: Hope Never Dies by Andrew Shaffer
The steadfast captain of the Nine-Nine is definitely a reader, and while his bookshelves are packed with weighty tomes and true classics, there’s definitely a silly side to Captain Holt. From his love of the Halloween Heist to his never-ending sass, Holt is the kind of guy who would definitely appreciate some political humor, and that’s where Hope Never Dies comes in. A hilarious and campy political fan-fic, this book (and its sequel) sees Barack Obama and Joe Biden solving crimes together. Even Holt’s stony face would crack at this one!

Gina Linetti: Siri, Who Am I? by Sam Tschida
Gina Linetti is glued to her phone 24/7…so first up, someone would have to get her an e-book, because she wouldn’t read it otherwise, and second, Siri, Who Am I? is the perfect book for her. We know Gina would see herself in the central character, Mia, who wakes up with amnesia and an apparently perfect (and rich) life. However, she soon starts to realize, through the mystery of her social media feed and an attractive housesitter helping her, that her life may not be as perfect as it seems.

Jake Peralta: Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett
We couldn’t resist recommending Jake a book set in Florida. After all, everyone knows how much he loved being stuck there while in the Witness Protection Program! However, Mostly Dead Things is so much more than a dig at his least-favorite place. It’s black humor, sexual strangeness, and a family grieving the loss of their taxidermist father, while delving into some less-than-legal ways of making money. Crime, comedy, and Florida? That’s Jake Peralta.

Terry Jeffords: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Despite his massive size, Terry is just a big teddy bear at heart, and he’s the kind of guy who has probably not only read Eat, Pray, Love, but occasionally uses it as a roadmap for his own life. He’d probably slip the brightly colored cover off Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic before reading it in the break room, but this heartfelt and earnest look at finding creativity in everyday life is just the thing for a big softie (with a creative streak) like Terry.

Amy Santiago: #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso
Amy is a seriously ambitious detective…and became the first female Sergeant in the district in recent seasons. To be fair, she’s also a total bookworm, and has probably read half the books in a Barnes & Noble, but just in case she hasn’t, Sophia Amoruso’s #Girlboss would be an ideal read. True, Amy isn’t exactly known for her love of fashion, but her love of non-fiction and stories of women rising to the top to create something amazing? That’s pure Amy, right there.

Rosa Diaz: Bonfire by Krysten Ritter
Rosa Diaz is a mystery, although fans get to find out just a little bit more about her each season. She’s tough, to the point, and keeps her cards extremely close to her chest, just like Abby, the central character in Bonfire. Abby might be a lawyer, not a detective, but she and Rosa have both methodically wiped out all traces of their past to create a great new life. And in Bonfire, Abby has to go confront hers while being drawn into a murder mystery. Rosa would love every twist and turn.

Charles Boyle: Stuff Every Beer Snob Should Know by Ellen Goldstein
Charles Boyle is an interesting one, and if there’s one thing he is known for loving, it’s food. A cookbook might be a little too obvious for Jake’s best friend, of course, but a trivia book for beer snobs? That’s perfect for Boyle. He may well assume that he already knows everything in these pages, but that’s the joy of it—discovering that there may be a few secrets that even he hasn’t quite figured out yet.

Finally, we’d mention Hitchcock and Scully, but let’s be honest here…these two would fall asleep before they got through a single chapter! Maybe the teams oldest detectives would be better off with a nice nap, not a book.
