Book Recommendations for Ghostbusters Characters
If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? Since it’s 2016, we’re gonna call Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wiig. As we count down to the release of the movie we’ve been looking forward to for the last year, we thought we’d round up some book recommendations for the newest faces of the Ghostbusters franchise.
Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In by Roger Fisher and William L. Ury
If the voiceover on the trailers is any indication, Abby Yates is the leader of this ragtag group of paranormal activity experts. Judging by the personalities on display, Yates is going to need a little help to keep her team focused and productive. One of the best selling business books of all time, authors Fisher and Ury utilize the psychology of negotiation to find lasting solutions to personal and professional disputes.
The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukjerjee
Erin Gilbert has a Ph.d. in particle physics and, it would seem, knows quite a lot about quantum physics as well. We want to give Gilbert a break from all those physics texts she’s reading during work hours while still recommending something she’s going to enjoy sinking her teeth in at the end of a long day. Siddhartha Mukjerjee’s biography of the gene is exactly what she needs. Piecing together science, social history, and Mukjerjee’s own personal narrative, The Gene is sure to offer Gilbert a new perspective on humanity as a whole.
The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro
Patty Tolan is a self-proclaimed New York expert, so she’s sure to be fascinated by this 1,336 page tome on Robert Moses’ use of unelected positions to design and implement many of the highways and bridges that make up the New York City today. Tolan is sure to villainize Robert Moses from the start when she learns that he consistently – and persistently – favored automobile traffic over the city’s mass transit system and the needs of the community. Offering a commendably unbiased look at Robert Moses, Caro’s biography is widely regarded to be one of the best of the 20th century.
Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe by Lisa Randall
Jillian Holtzmann is the engineer of the group, so we’re recommending a cursory dive into particle physics to give her a well-rounded look at paranormal activity. In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, astrophysicist Lisa Randall hypothesizes that dark matter existing on the plane of the Milky Way galaxy may have indirectly led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. To be a fly on the wall when Holtzmann finishes this book and starts dialoguing with Dr. Erin Gilbert about it!
Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay
From what we see in the trailers, Kevin is trying to insert himself into the Ghostbusters narrative the same way the male critics of this female-centric reboot are. You aren’t the most important voice in the room, Kevin. We suggest he take a long hard look at Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist and think about what he’s done. It might save him from being possessed by a ghost the next time around.
