Book and Waffle Pairings
August 24th is National Waffle Day and our inner Leslie Knope is shouting for us to celebrate this holiday every day – or at least ten times a year, to coincide with our ten favorite waffle moments on Parks and Recreation. This year, we’re celebrating this silly holiday with our entire selves, by pairing some of our favorite books with some of our favorite waffles. Grab a napkin; things might get sticky.
Eggos and My Best Friend's Exorcism
These days, Eggos give us an immediate Stranger Things vibe – the same feeling we get whenever we think about My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix! The titular exorcism is just as spooky as it sounds, but the warm comfort of a freezer-burned Eggo is enough to assure us that everything is going to be all right. For added deliciousness, throw some butter onto that waffle the second it pops out of the toaster. Slather on a healthy dose of store brand syrup and dive right into the 80s nostalgia.

Belgian waffles and Party of Two
Jasmine Guillory’s latest novel Party of Two is full of delicious sweet treats, but there isn’t a single waffle mentioned. We’re fixing that error immediately (sorry, Jasmine) by pairing our read of this steamy romance with a stack of delicious Belgian waffles, hot off the waffle iron. Because Max would 100% have a waffle iron at his home in LA – a swearing in gift from his incredible campaign staff, naturally.

Hong Kong egg waffles and Somewhere Only We Know
Maurene Goo’s delightful young adult novel Somewhere Only We Know takes place on the streets of Hong Kong – mostly at night when street food is necessary and plentiful! Which is why we’re recommending pairing Hong Kong egg waffles (鷄蛋仔) with this incredible, adventurous novel. If we close our eyes, we can picture Lucky and Jack huddled in an alley, playfully fighting over who gets the bigger bite. Lucky thinks they’re hiding from paparazzi, but Jack knows that they can never really hide.

Pizzelles and Call Me by Your Name
While delicious Italian pizzelles are never directly referenced in Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman – and are (gasp!) never on the table in the film adaptation either – we have to imagine that Elio and Oliver were devouring these crispy cookies between kisses. It’s practically blasphemy to spend time in Italy without doing a pizzelle tour of the countryside – and we know those boys had bikes!

Potato waffles and The Royal We
Rounding out our waffle tour is the potato waffle – the British cousin of the latke. We know that Chex Mix is the true food star of The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, but we have to imagine that there’s a cut scene where Prince Nicholas botches a batch of potato waffles while trying to impress Bex. Who wouldn’t try to woo their love with savory breakfast foods and sour cream?
