Other Interspecies Friendships in Pop Culture

We’ve got E.T. on our mind today and it’s a wonderful feeling. Our favorite extraterrestrial graces our pages today in a brand new picture book from illustrator Kim Smith. It’s enough to get our 80s-loving hearts a flutter. To celebrate this book’s release and the beautiful friendship between Elliott and E.T., here are some of our favorite interspecies friendships in pop culture.

Literary Covens as Bona Fide Witches

It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with witches over here at Quirk Books. We’ve explored our favorite covens in pop culture, published a book about self-care through spellbinding (shout out to all the Basic Witches in our lives), and are known to describe a good hair day as “witchy.” But what if our favorite covens from classic literature were bona fide witches? Imagine if the women of Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Les Miserables, The Great Gatsby, and Romeo and Juliet were all masters of spells and potions. Just imagine how differently those plots would turn out.

The Reading Dead

[TV still from The Walking Dead, AMC]

While the Walking Dead has had a bit of a controversial run this last year and a half, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still one of the best shows on television. As the show runs into its eighth season, it is becoming a bit of a question of what the characters do in their down time. Not every single moment of every day can be filled with killing zombies and fighting Negan, right? So with that in mind, we thought it would be nice to give the characters some reading suggestions for the next time they walk into a town and have a chance to raid a library. After all, there must be tons of great books laying around in the zombie ravaged land, they aren’t exactly the same type of commodity as food or weapons.

We get it. Scary isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time. Which is why we’ve put together this list of slightly spooky stories where something’s just a little off – paranormal books that will get you in the Halloween spirit without keeping you up all night.

Book to Film Adaptations to Watch During Hispanic Heritage Month

Mother nature has not been kind to the Latino community in recent weeks. An earthquake devastated Mexico, two major hurricanes flooded Texas and Florida, and a third deadly hurricane has left Puerto Rico destroyed and without power. And it’s Hispanic Heritage Month. So if you’ve already given to the relief efforts and you want to remind yourself of the rich Hispanic culture you are supporting, consider watching a few films based on novels by Hispanic writers. (Odd coincidence—it seems the ‘80s were a good decade for Latin novels.)

Hana Mae Lee’s birthday is today and while she’s best known as the incredibly soft spoken yet powerful beatboxer Lilly in Pitch Perfect, the real Hana Mae is a bona fide badass and funny as hell. To celebrate her birthday, we’ve created a wish list of literary roles that we’d love to see Hana Mae Lee play. Listen up, Hollywood. We’ve got some big plans.
