Literary Roles of Benedict Cumberbatch

Editor's Note: To finish out 2018, we're revisiting some of our favorite blog posts from the past year. This post was originally published on 7/18/18.

We all know that Benedict Cumberbatch made his mark playing literary great Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock, but how many other literary Cumberbatch roles can you name? While we could spend literally his entire birthday coming up with literary misspellings of his name and other bookish memes, we’d rather celebrate the literary roles that decorate his IMDB page.

Other Literary Siblings Who Could Use a Visit from Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins Returns is finally in theaters this week and you know how we feel about Lin-Manuel Miranda. But you might not know how we feel about the practically perfect in every way woman of the hour herself: Mary Poppins. (Spoiler alert: we love her.) And while we’re very happy that she answered Jane and Michael Banks’ advertisement all those years ago, we’ve started wondering what some of our other favorite literary siblings might learn from the nanny’s teachings. A Case for Non-Christmas Christmasy Movies

The weather outside is frightful and, frankly, we’re tired of watching Elf on a loop. There are only so many times we can see Will Ferrell put maple syrup on his spaghetti. (Ew.) Bo Larson and Other YA Dreamboats

Dumplin’ premiered on Netflix this week (and select theaters – squee!) and we are very very excited. Mostly because of Bo Larson. Oh, you don’t know about Bo Larson? We know Peter Kavinsky (and his real-life counterpart Noah Centineo) stole everyone’s heart this summer, but just you wait!

Humor Books by Funny Women

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is back this week and to say we’re excited would be a serious understatement. We spent the better part of the first season pouring over the biographies of Lenny Bruce (who inspires Midge Maisel) and Joan Rivers (who inspires Rachel Brosnahan), this season we’re taking a more contemporary approach. These are our absolute favorite humor books by women – just in time for you to start craving season three.

Literary Roles We’d Like to See Michael B. Jordan Play

We’re celebrating the release of Creed II and Michael Bae Jordan by daydreaming about the literary roles he might one day take on. Sure, we’ve been bookishly sated by Michael B. Jordan before. He featured in that unfortunate adaptation of Fahrenheit 451. And he starred in seasons four and five of Friday Night Lights. (Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.) But today, we’re talking dream roles. And we cannot wait to share those with you.
