Abducted: Planets We’d Be Okay Visiting
[Movie still from The Little Prince, ON Animation Studios]
Happy Alien Abduction Day! While we’re not exactly psyched to get pulled away from Earth by strange creatures, we do have some planets we wouldn’t mind seeing. We’ve listed the ones worthy of a tour below.
Asteroid from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry
While the Little Prince is technically from an asteroid, we are still categorizing this as a planet. It seems like a pleasant enough place. After all, roses thrive there, which indicates that there is a good water source and some sunlight. Besides, the Little Prince loved his rose, so it gives us hope that inhabitants from here are environmentally-conscious and that the planet will last a long time.
Perelandra from Perelandra by C.S. Lewis
This planet is literally paradise, so we can’t think of a better place to go. The rulers actually look like human beings, and the world is full of lush vegetation. Our major beef? It seems like it would be less than pleasant getting there. We prefer not to use ice caskets as our primary means of transportation. We like cars or spaceships.
Uriel from A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engel
Uriel is our childhood dream: a place where centaurs exist. Not only are there centaurs, but you can watch gorgeous moonsets and sunsets with them. The best part? No ice coffins to get there. You just need to “tesser.” Basically, all you have to do is “wrinkle” through time and space. No biggie, right?
Pern from Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
People ride dragons in Pern. Do we really need to say more?
Miliways from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams
We don’t know about you, but we are always starving after traveling. That’s why Miliways is the ideal planet. Not only do you get to eat a five-star meal, but you get beautiful views while dining. The best part? Reservations are easy to get, and you only have to pay a penny for your meal (they get interest on it over 170 quintillion years). It’s pretty easy to see why this restaurant has been around for over one hundred and seventy thousand million billion years.
Discworld from Discworld by Terry Pratchett
We cannot imagine a more hilarious planet to visit than Discworld. First of all, the actual planet itself is absurd. A disc on top of elephants on top of a turtle in space? We cannot think of a more ridiculous design for a planet. As for the inhabitants of the world, we think they would be a blast to hang out with. We think Sam Vimes and Rincewind would make great pals. Heck, even Death doesn’t seem that bad. After all, he has a granddaughter named Susan. Who can be scared of a grandpa?
