Book Recs for the Characters in What We Do in the Shadows

One of our favorite shows of all time is back and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. We’re all stuck inside. And the vampires of What We Do in the Shadows are stuck inside their dark coffins during the day. And because it can’t always be easy to lay in a light-proof box – especially when you’re not the least bit tired – we’ve come up with some pretty excellent book recommendations to lull our favorite vampires to sleep at the end of a long night.
The Power by Naomi Alderman
We know how much Nandor is obsessed with humans and all of the human things they do. Which is why we know he’d love The Power by Naomi Alderman. It’s about a bunch of really interested humans – a group of women, mostly – who discover that they have the power to maim and kill using an electricity-like energy. They’re like vampires but maybe a little cooler? Don’t let the others hear him talking like that, though.

Dirty Rowdy Thing by Christina Lauren
We know that Laszlo has an almost insatiable appetite for romance, which is why we’re recommending Dirty Rowdy Thing by Christina Lauren. Unlike most romance novels, this book uses the male point of view as the primary perspective, allowing Laszlo to see himself in this novel. And while he is very happily married to Nadja, it’s gotta be fun to fantasize about some truly delicious romance characters. And we mean that literally. The man is out for blood.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
There’s nothing more appealing to a vampire than a virgin, which is why we’re recommending The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang to Nadja. Like her husband, she’s equally insatiable on the romance front. Plus she loves to really dig into the backstory of her meals. How do you think she decided to turn Jenna into a vampire instead of killing her outright? She has a heart of gold. Kind of. Give her one chapter of The Kiss Quotient – maybe two – and Nadja will be conspiring to turn Stella Lane into a vampire too.

Dracula by Bram Stoker
Guillermo is always doing whatever it takes to get in the good graces of the vampires in the house, which is why we’re recommending he go back to basics with Dracula by Bram Stoker. Sure, Nandor will gripe about the fact that Stoker’s always claiming to have “invented vampires” and Laszlo will laugh and call it a fairy tale. But it’s important that he brush up on the mythology, especially if he’s going to be tasked with becoming a vampire himself.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix
We know that Colin is always trying to get a rise out of the other vampires, which is why we’re recommending he read The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, preferably in front of his more delicate housemates. We’re not usually the betting type, but our money says Grady Hendrix didn’t include any energy vampire slaying in this book. So Colin is weirdly safe here.
