It’s Meg Cabot’s birthday today and we’re riding the waves of nostalgia. There’s an incredible wealth of young adult novels out today, spilling off bookstore and library shelves. So it might be hard to imagine a time when voracious teen readers had to scramble to find something new. Luckily, Meg Cabot had our back, giving us The Princess Diaries series and so much more. Today, we’re celebrating everything she’s given us by showcasing some of our favorite books.
The Princess Diaries
If you’re feeling some early 2000s nostalgia, sink in to the world of Mia Thermopolis and the fictional country of Genovia. (We love their pears.) As readers, we’re so grateful that Meg Cabot gave us a peek in to the diary of this gawky nerd turned glamorous (and overwhelmed) princess. And this was before we even knew Anne Hathaway’s name! The series is compulsively readable – and the perfect pandemic reading project.

All-American Girl
If you’re a politics nerd looking for some escapism, look no further than All-American Girl. When the very cute First Son enrolls at Samantha Madison’s school – and her art class! – it’s the last thing she wants to deal with. As a resident of D.C., she’s already dealing with taxation without representation and a very popular older sister. She doesn’t need another thing to worry about. But when an innocuous moment inadvertently leads to Sam saving the President from an assassination attempt and thrusting her into the public spotlight, high school suddenly becomes the least of her worries.

Shadowland
If you’re a fan of the paranormal, you’ll want to check out Meg Cabot’s The Mediator series, starting with Shadowland. Susannah Simons can see dead people, and that’s okay. She serves as a teenage mediator, a liaison between ghosts and the great beyond. So it’s not all that unusual that a hot (ghost) guy named Jesse won’t leave her alone. But there is something a little off about another ghost in her orbit – and this one’s out for revenge. The Mediator series is pre-Twilight, pre-paranormal romance trends. And honestly, we’re ready for it to become a cult classic.

Nicola and the Viscount
If you’re a historical romance fan obsessed with the idea of the London social season (hello, Bridgerton) you’ll want to snag a copy of Nicola and the Viscount. At sixteen, Nicola Sparks is ready to experience every one of the fabulous activities that the social season has in store. And she’s already caught the eye of a rich viscount named Lord Sebastian. Everything is an absolute dream come true, until the positively annoying Nathaniel Sheridan starts to question the viscount’s character, infuriating Nicola to no end. It’s a classic romcom set up from one of our favorite young adult authors of all time. What could go wrong?

Which is why we’re recommending the graphic novel Black Canary: Ignite, the perfect book to read with the special tween or young comics fan in your life.
