Five Resolutions Inspired By Books
January is the time for new year's resolutions, right? Going to the gym. Eating healthier. Calling your mom more often. Sure, those work. But, as book lovers, we should draw our inspiration from our favorite literature, right?
I propose five book-inspired new year's resolutions.
1. Nab the proverbial big fish. (Moby Dick) – Dream big and go after it–even if it takes all the energy, focus and resolve you have.
2. Release your hidden talent. (The Harry Potter series) – While yours may not be quite as spectacular as wizardry, I'm sure you have something unique to share with the world. Don't be afraid to show it to your friends, co-workers or family.
3. Try something risky–or risqué. (Fifty Shades of Grey) – Go outside your comfort zone–in your personal life or your professional life. Try something new.
4. Live every day like it was your last day on Earth. (The Last Policeman) – You don't need an asteroid on a collision course with Earth to realize the importance of living life to the fullest. Sure, the bucket list is nice for this type of thing. But, so are the simple things like feeding the ducks in the park or visiting with family.
5. Start a revolution. (The Hunger Games) – Don't take this too literally. There are plenty of worthwhile causes that you can support. Find one that you are passionate about and contribute in whatever way you can. Rally the support of others.
Resolutionaries, I challenge you to stake your claim on the new year and have at it. Share your own book-inspired resolutions in the comments or on Twitter (#bookishresolutions).
Happy New Year!
